This music video is not by a native Icelandic band, but it sounds like one. What is really cool though is the pure beauty of Iceland caught in the filming.

The girl in this video, Unna Birna, was Miss World 2005! Her mother was a previous Miss World also, and I have to say that NOWHERE are there as MANY beautiful women as there are HERE, in Iceland.

If you want to see what is going on here in Iceland “live”, as in RIGHT NOW, then go here: http://eldgos.mila.is/ where you can watch a number of live web-cam broadcasts!

By the way, anyone interested in local Icelandic news in English can go here: http://www.mbl.is/mm/frettir/english/ – I have to say though that posts by the “Reykjavik Grapevine” and “Iceland Review” tend to be negative in comparing Iceland unfavourably with other countries, sort of “apologetic” I suppose you could say. God knows why, but there you go. They also tend to back the wrong causes, whereas “Icenews” is more unbiased and objective. This is my opinion anyway.

You might also be interested in watching some of the Icelandic News and other programs that are broadcast on-line here, in Icelandic of course (look in the archives too): http://www.ruv.is/ruv And if you use Google Translate on their home page, you’ll get a general idea of things, though the translation is far from “perfect” sometimes 😀 Here: http://www.ruv.is/

By the way… Icelanders (except for their immediate parents and grandparents) refer to, and address, each other by their first names (second as well, if the first name is common to others immediately related). Also, all Icelanders are known as “son of” or “daughter of” (and then the name of their father’s first name). Hence …….”son” (son of) or  ……”dóttir” (daughter of). As a result, most Icelanders can trace their ancestry back many generations (they have the most complete and exact ancestral records of anyone), and any Icelander only has to ask a few questions of any other to discover their relationship to each other!

Iceland’s entry in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest!…

And this entry came 2nd in 2009!…

Most people are familiar with Björk, Sigur Rós, Emiliana Torrini, Gus Gus, and now also Of Monsters and Men, but did you know that almost everyone in Iceland can sing, play an instrument, dance, act, write, paint, sculpt (as well as many other crafts – and are “better than average” at all of these – especially when performing live), can do (and win at) sports (including Handball, MMA, Strongest Man in the World, Cross-Fit, with Icelandic footballers scoring goals for many teams in the English Premier League (as well as in many other countries abroad)? Iceland has had no less than four “Miss World’s”! And not only this, but right now you have a “box-office smash” with “Contraband” starring Mark Wahlburg, written and directed by, Baltasar Kormákur, an Icelander (originally done in Iceland), and many movies have been filmed in Iceland, including scenes from the sci-fi horror “Prometheus”, “Oblivion”, “Noah”, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, a few of the James Bond movies, etc! Not bad, for a country of only 320,000 people!

And here is the iconic GusGus – 3 tracks, “David”, one of their earlier ones, “Over” and “Arabian Horse”, from the album of the same name. – Vikings from Iceland!
